One of the most popular topics for the college application essay is “My grandmother.” If you are planning to write an essay about your grandmother, you have a challenge ahead of you.
For each of the next four weeks, I will be writing an article with tips for writing college application essays. I will cover the popular essay themes of “my grandmother,” “my sport,” “a famous person,” and “a fictional character.”
I was initially disconcerted to read in The Wall Street Journal that the largest public and private companies, nonprofits and government agencies favor graduates who did not attend Ivy League Colleges. But upon further investigation, it appears Ivy League is still the best path to success.
I was going to wait a week to publish this letter, but I figure now is the time you need it! Look for what succeeds about this letter of recommendation. It got me into Yale and Stanford.
Letters of Recommendation (LORs) are ranked as the 5th most important part of your college application. Most LORs make no difference because they sound like everyone else’s. They don’t hurt, but they don’t help. To make sure you get LORs that actually help you get into a top college, follow these guidelines.
You can do anything you want to do! This quiz is designed to help you think about the college majors that are available to you. It will also make you think about your own personality traits and how they may fit well within different areas of study.
For me, the end of summer means a vacation to New Hampshire and the fast approach of college admissions season. What does it mean to you?
Succeeding in these areas requires some planning ahead. If you are not a harp player already by the time you are entering your senior year of high school, it is unlikely that you will become one. If you haven’t been deeply involved in a student organization, it might be difficult to take on leadership suddenly. It’s more important than ever to find your passion early and follow it.

If you are applying to grad, law, business or medical school, the rankings diverge even more widely from a straight Ivy League ticker, and it would be a huge mistake to choose a program simply for its name, without investigating the reputation of the specific program that interests you. Different schools are known for their programs in different areas. The top schools are frequently not Ivy League; in the job market for each industry, the top programs are known and respected.
An Ivy League education is not essential to career success, but it sure doesn’t hurt. Is it worth it to you to enter the competition?
