Below are some telephone interview tips to keep in mind so your next phone interview is a success.

1. Answer your cell phone. If you forget to turn it off and it rings, turn it off immediately, apologize profusely and look mortified.

2. Ask questions about the company that could have easily been answered with a modicum of research. I've had candidates say, "So what exactly do you guys do?"

Delivering an effective job interview really takes something. It’s essential to be professional in every way possible: don’t show up late, have all your papers in order, do your research, etc. Alison Green of U.S. News & World Report warns of 9 ways you can quickly and effectively ruin your job interview, from answering your cell phone to talking to much (or not enough): 9 Ways to Ruin a Job Interview. This situation has happened to all of us - it's happened to me in my career, and it's happened to every one of you. We felt like we crushed the interview, yet we didn't get the job. Because hiring managers are too busy (and too afraid of lawsuits) to give meaningful feedback, we're left frustrated, unfulfilled, and scratching our heads.

Phil Rosenberg gives a run-down of hiring factors, many of which are unpredictable even by the hiring manager. Here are just some of the things that might affect whether or not you get the job. Why Didn’t I Get the Job Offer?
